Up in the Cyclone: An Exploration of the Vortex

Figuratively speaking, cyclones represent those uncomfortable or unpleasant events that propel us to higher places. We must tear down before we can rebuild. Cyclones help us do that -- or do it for us if we avoid the task ourselves. In psychological terms, it’s a disintegration process that usually manifests as a sign of spiritual growth after a period of instability. Inner tensions resulting from cognitive dissonance, unresolved complexes, or adversarial experiences make us face what it is about ourselves that needs to change. Most of the time we can take notice of these forces and harness them before they reach such destructive potential. Yet sometimes a tornado is just the kind of “winds of change” needed to push us off the edge.
